Joel has played trombone since the 8th grade in Chelsea, Massachusetts. He studied with John Coffee, who was internationally
known as a trombonist and educator. In high school, he played in a small band along with Chick Corea, who played trumpet and
piano. The four-piece band, known as the Chicky Corea Orchestra, played school dances and various gigs in the Boston
area. Both Joel and Chick played and performed with the Teenage Jazz Club Big Band. The band was directed by Everett
Longstreth, and rehearsed weekly at the Berklee School of Music. The band performed at Boston's Storyville, one of the most
famous jazz clubs of all time.
Joel has a BSEE degree from MIT, where he continued his musical association with Chick Corea in a jazz
sextet that rehearsed weekly at MIT, and performed in concert at MIT and at Alfred University in upstate New York. He also
performed with the MIT Concert Jazz Band.
Joel moved to California in the mid '60s. He is currently retired after a long distinguished career as a
semiconductor engineer and executive.
He was the first circuit designer hired by Intel (employee #20).
Joel was a charter member of the Full Faith & Credit Big Band. He participated in several
recordings and performed numerous times at various Bay Area venues with the band.
Joel currently lives in Atherton. In addition to playing Trombone with Full Spectrum, he is
currently playing with the Musician's Warehouse Big Band, Bob Enos Soundwave, and Tuesday Night Live.
